ABOUT

The 1st International Congress on Politic, Energy, Metallurgy, and Environment for BRICS (PEME for BRICS-2018) is planned to be held at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais (BRAZIL) from April 10th to 12th. PEME for BRICS-2017 series of conferences, is planned to be held once in a year, is a Brazilian initiative, the major objective of which is to create and sustain interest in iron and steelmaking. It was chosen UFOP because is the most antique metallurgical engineering course of Brazil, also was chosen Ouro Preto because is a beautiful highly touristic city.

Ouro Preto is a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ouro Preto is located in one of the main areas of the gold cycle. The Historical City of Ouro Preto was the first Brazilian site considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a title it received in 1980. It was considered a state heritage in 1933 and a national monument in 1938. The city became known as an "open-air museum" preserving a large nucleus of essentially intact colonial houses, prestigious throughout Brazil/World, so much so that the Historic City was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, when the organization emphasized the authenticity, integrity and originality of its urban panorama, qualified as a work of the human genius, its historical importance as the seat of the Inconfidência Mineira and of a flourishing cultural pole, and the relief of its main religious monuments, where they performed masters of superior importance like Aleijadinho and Ataíde, that left works that are put like the first signs of genuine Brazilianness. Ouro Preto was one of the first mining cities to be emancipated. Ouro Preto is a historical city and has one of the best University in Brazil, as it will be described next.

The Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) was created, on August 21st, 1969, joined by the centennial and traditional School of Pharmacy (created in 1839) and Mining School (founded in 1876). In 2000, the Center for Open and Distance Education (CEAD) was created. UFOP implemented postgraduate and undergraduate courses in the distance modality, covering 90 cities in Minas Gerais, four in the state of São Paulo and eight in Bahia. UFOP, in the process of expansion, inaugurated an advanced campus in João Monlevade-MG. Today, UFOP offers 42 undergraduate courses. As for the postgraduate course, 22 master's degree courses, 9 doctoral options and three distance specializations are offered. In total, there are more than 15 thousand students, about 802 administrative technicians and approximately 995 teachers, between staff and substitutes. The alumni of UFOP are differentiated and occupy, today, select positions in Brazil and in the world, occupying positions of leadership in several areas with great focus for the engineering. In the last 5 years more than 5.6 thousand works were published in events, 3.5 thousand articles in periodicals and more than 1.5 thousand books and chapters of books. Therefore, the University of Ouro Preto presents great potential to develop promising researches, mainly in the areas of pharmacy and engineering, and the university's latest commitment to large projects is the carbon recycling in the steel industries.

In order to reduce the emissions of the steelmaking industries in BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) by 30%, a strategy has been developed that brings technological innovations to this industry. It is proposed to use co-electrolysis cells coupled to Fischer-Tropsch reactors to convert CO2 into fuel hydrocarbons. BRICS has a production potential of 335 billion liters of these hydrocarbons, including gasoline (75 billion), kerosene (65 billion), diesel (70 billion), hydrocarbons (52 billion), gases (53 billion) and paraffins (60 billion) - the paraffin can be converted into smaller chain hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons can move more than US$ 450 billion within the BRICS. Not all technology for this process is available for the industrial scale, which makes this proposal ambitious, and a race without apparent competitors. With this procedure it is proposed to use three quarters of the paraffin to return to the process and with this a reduction by 30% of mineral coal. This mineral coal would therefore be used in the production of energy; the energy produced would be used to increase the productivity of the steelmaking industry. In this way, a 30% reduction in emissions from steelmaking industries of the BRICS countries can be achieved through a single process, displacement of 450 million tons of coal per year for energy production, production of 335 billion liters of fuels and a warming of the economies with more than US$ 450 billion. And more than US$ 2 trillion if the technology involved were considered.
